Guyana Trans United was founded by a group Trans Sex workers on 14th January 2012 in recognition of inclusion and gender equality but there was no trans-specific organization in Guyana.
In 2015 Guyana Trans United was registered at that time as the only trans-led organization in Guyana and thus it works locally, nationally as well as regionally.
Several founding members had been involved in other LGBTIQ organizations and rights work and were eager to engage greater numbers of their colleagues in such work, as well as to take on greater leadership roles within their own communities.

GTU as an organization is govern by a board of directors who are reviewed every two years .
